THE BEGINNINGS
High craftsmanship has always been part of our DNA. Who would have thought that Capod’opera got its start in the world of design with kitchens? These images of the company’s very first catalogue are from its photographic archive. The Mediterranea and Metropoli collections reflect the company’s already defined values.
-
THE FIRST PIECE OF FURNITURE
In 1998, Capod’opera’s first design – Settanta – is drawn up on a drafting table. A collection of separate, broken down modules, there is nothing like it on the market at the time. The design works well and it is decided to photograph it. The first catalogue dedicated to the living area begins to take shape.

A SPECIAL RELATIONSHIP
In 1999 the designer Alessio Bassan joins the team. A valuable collaborator, over the years he has proved to be a key figure at the company. Some of the collection’s most important and timeless pieces bear his signature, including Privacy, City, Quadro, Aero and Aero Bar.

CROCODILE DUNDEE
In the summer of 2005 Silvano finds himself in Australia. Upon seeing a piece of crocodile skin for the first time, he can’t help but notice, above all, the wonderful detail in its scales. A perfect pattern that will become the Dundee texture. To this day it is part of the collection.
-
THE “DVD STAND”
In the early 2000s, the City DVD player stand, which is designed to hide the electronic device and its cables, proves to be a huge success. It is covered entirely in the Sanremo finish, which is achieved through gloss painted screen printing. A floral pattern that is inspired by the changing seasons.
-
PRIVACY IS BORN
Privacy is born from the collaboration with the designer Alessio Bassan. Its sophisticated shape, and the way it plays on proportions and thicknesses, makes it very popular from the outset. The model is developed into a complete line for day and nightime areas. New materials and different combinations are explored.
-
SURFACES CATALOGUE
2007 is a turning point. The company’s research and development in the field of textures produces some exciting results. It realises that it has a valuable, highly distinctive skill: the ability to transform the surfaces of its creations. The first Surfaces Catalogue, which contains the processes and ennoblements conceived up to that moment, is realised.
-
DESIGN MEETS ART
Capod’opera Art is a project that promotes artistic contamination. Ten emerging artists and well-known faces of design embrace the company’s proposal to create unique pieces of limited edition design. Each artist is free to interpret a piece of furniture. The results are exhibited in Milan’s Tortona area and at various international events.

THE COMIC BOOK COMES TO LIFE
“Valentina, la donna è mobile” and “Corto Maltese” are two special projects inspired by the famous series of comic books by Guido Crepax and Hugo Pratt. Both Valentina and Corto Maltese embody the values of freedom and adventure that drive Capod’Opera. The two collections are distinguished by different decorative techniques.

Welcoming Quadro
This is perhaps the piece of furniture that most represents the company’s distinctive approach. Its famous two-depth checkerboard motif makes it seem like a juxtaposition of canvases, while at the same time suggesting a monolithic piece of rational architecture. Quadro is a prince of contrasts.
